What Is the Schengen Area?

The Schengen Area is made up of European countries with a single visa policy. A valid Schengen visa allows you to travel between member nations, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal and Greece.

A short-stay Schengen visa typically allows you to stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

If you plan to visit multiple countries, apply at the embassy or consulate in the one where you will stay the longest. If you spend equal time in each country, you will usually apply through the first one you arrive at.

What Do I Need for a Schengen Visa?

• Provide proof of lodging, such as hotel bookings, rental confirmation or an invitation letter from the host.
• Travel insurance that includes medical coverage for the entire Schengen Area.
• Provide recent bank statements as proof of sufficient finances for the trip.
• Proof of employment, education or other reason to return to South Africa.
• Include a cover letter outlining the purpose of your trip and travel arrangements.

Which Schengen Visa Do I Need?

The short-stay Type C Schengen visa is the most popular option for most South Africans travelling on vacation, to see relatives, or on a short business trip.

How Do I Apply for a Schengen Visa?

   We first recommend determining which nation will handle your application. Typically, this is the country in which you will spend the most time.
2. Schedule your appointment.
   Most Schengen visa applications from South Africa require an appointment. Appointment availability varies depending on the country and time of year; therefore, we recommend reserving as soon as possible.
3. Prepare your documents.
   This is one of the most critical steps in the procedure. We frequently see applications delayed because documents are missing, outdated, or non-compliant documents frequently cause application delays., outdated, or non-compliant. Outdated documents often lead to application delays or do not fulfil the requirements of the relevant embassies.
4. Attend Your Appointment.
   In most cases, your application and supporting documentation must be submitted in person. Depending on your past visa history, biometrics such as fingerprints may be required.
5. Wait for the decision.
